Get to Know Our New TMI Manager, Charlotte Gwilliam

26 Jul, 2019

Our dedicated Thompsons Meetings and Incentives (TMI) team has a new captain at the helm, and she plans to take our MICE division to new heights! We caught up with Charlotte Gwilliam, our recently appointed TMI Manager for a quick get-to-know-you Q&A.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I grew up on a farm and can speak three languages fluently. I’m adventurous – I enjoy fishing, cycling, running, rock climbing and paddling. And of course, I love reading and cooking. Having worked in several travel divisions, I settled in corporate and MICE and absolutely love working in this industry. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

What’s happening in TMI that you’re most excited about?

We are working on very exciting overseas projects and there are a few more in the pipeline.  The team is travelling to Mauritius for an event and travelling to Japan for the Rugby World Cup. Locally, we’re doing a Maclaren trip with a client, so it’s a very exciting time. We’re also looking to grow the division and changing the MICE image with a new and improved look. Watch this space!

What are some of the MICE trends to look out for in the next few months?

I have found that corporates tend to follow world events, for example World Cups, Mardi Gras etc. They also enjoy unique food and drink experiences, like gin tastings or learning to make sushi.

What new incentive destinations will be popular in 2020, both locally and abroad?

Locally, the Western Cape, Cape Town and the Garden Route remain popular. Abroad, the Middle East is trending. Cruise destinations – and cruising as a whole – will always be a hit.

What are your top tips for a successful incentive?

  1. Decide what your incentive objective is, your delegates’ interests and preferences, and create a suitable budget.
  2. Ask us for new unique, new experiences that will enhance your incentive trip.
  3. Always plan in advance, considering seasons and world events that may impact availability and budget.

What was your best travel experience?

New York. I enjoyed the vibe of the city, the nightlife, the sights, and, of course, the shopping!

Another highlight was Morocco; the diverse culture and awesome sights in Casablanca and Marrakech. I particularly enjoyed visiting the markets and loved the food. I will eat Moroccan food every day, if I could!
