Give us a peek into your daily routine. What’s your go-to trick for staying on top of everything?
Success often begins with a strong start to the day. For Sharon Leong, it’s all about an early workout. “I kick off my day with cycling or a boxing session,” she reveals. “Eating healthy and setting daily goals helps me stay focused and clear-minded.”
Zinhle Mahlaba also emphasises the importance of organisation. “I start my day by reviewing my schedule and setting priorities. Using a to-do list to outline my key goals helps me stay focused on what needs to be accomplished and manage my time effectively.”
How do you foster a positive team culture in a fast-paced and constantly evolving industry like corporate travel?
Building a positive team culture is crucial in the dynamic world of corporate travel. Marilize de Beer prioritises understanding and addressing her team’s needs. “I step in to assist whenever my team feels demotivated or faces challenges,” she says. “At Thompsons Travel, teamwork is fundamental. I constantly remind everyone that we’re in this together and encourage them to ask for support when needed.”
Sharon Leong emphasises the importance of active engagement. “Make it a point to connect with every team member, offer support, and keep teamwork at the forefront of our efforts,” she advises.
What is your favourite motivational quote/motto to keep you going?
Staying motivated is crucial, and our leaders have some powerful sources of inspiration. Zinhle Mahlaba finds strength in the quote, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” This mantra is a powerful reminder to keep pushing forward despite challenges.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received from a non-work-related source?
Kaylene Du Plessis offers this piece of wisdom from beyond the workplace: “Never react when you’re angry. Staying calm is key in any situation.” This advice underscores the importance of emotional control in effective leadership.
What specific methods do you use to inspire and lead your team towards success?
Sharon Leong believes in leading by example and empowering her team. “By empowering others, they’ll discover their true leadership potential,” she explains.
Marilize de Beer adds a personal touch to her leadership style. “I keep my team motivated by giving small gifts of appreciation after every monthly meeting. It’s a reminder that their work is valued. I also encourage them to keep their heads held high, even during tough times, because those challenges build strength and resilience.”
What’s one piece of advice you wish you could give your younger self at the start of your career?
Kaylene Du Plessis would tell herself, “Be brave and step out of your comfort zone to grow.” Sharon Leong encourages believing in oneself: “Always believe in yourself and know that anything is possible.” Zinhle Mahlaba advises embracing learning opportunities, even if they seem daunting. Marilize de Beer’s message is one of self-acceptance: “Stop putting so much pressure on yourself. You are good enough. Take it day by day and remember that today is a gift.”
If you could have any superpower to help with your daily tasks, what would it be?
When asked about superpowers that could assist with their daily tasks, the responses were as intriguing as they were imaginative. Sharon Leong dreams of “the super speed of the Flash and the strength of Wonder Woman – I’m somewhat of a superhero fan!”
